Family Care Teams: Indigenous Health and Family Care Teams

This 1-hour webinar for Family Care Teams explored the vital role of Indigenous Patient Navigators (IPNs) in enhancing culturally safe, trauma-informed care within interprofessional health teams. It highlighted how IPNs support Indigenous patients and families by bridging cultural, linguistic, and logistical gaps and by offering emotional and historical context rooted in colonial trauma. Guest speakers shared personal and professional insights into the importance of storytelling, language-appropriate resources, and creating welcoming spaces. The session addressed challenges in extending IPN services to both travelling patients and those in urban areas, such as St. John’s, and emphasized the integration of Indigenous knowledge into care and education.
